Argentina Spinetta 1950-2012

Spinetta
Tu Nombre sobre mi Nombre

Argentine rock star Luis Alberto Spinetta has died in Buenos Aires aged 62, after suffering lung cancer. The songwriter and guitarist was considered a pioneer of Argentine rock music, and his songs often touched on social themes. Fellow musicians hailed Spinetta, nicknamed El Flaco or Skinny, as "one of the greatest poets of Argentine music". He died at home surrounded by his four children. Fans and fellow musicians, including Argentina's Charly Garcia and Cuba's Silvio Rodriguez, posted tributes to Spinetta on social media websites. The Argentine culture ministry, in a statement on its website, described him as "an exquisite poet" and a "complete autodidact in his musical training, deep reader of poetry and philosophy, jazz lover". Spinetta began in the 1960s with his band Almendra and later played with the bands Pescado Rabioso and Invisible. He also had a solo career. He announced last year that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Chile :: Ana Tijoux :: Shock

Ana Tijoux
Shock

This song is an homage to protests happening all over the world, but specifically the demonstrations that took place in Chile in 2011, in which students demanded access to quality education. Tijoux raps about the Chilean class divide and points a finger at politicians and executives of big corporations as contributors to the country's current state. The chorus goes, "Your time is up, we will not allow this anymore / Your doctrine of shock, your time is up, it is time."

Spain: Ketama :: Aquellas Pequeñas Cosas

Ketama & Joan Manuel Serrat
Aquellas pequeñas cosas

A trio, featuring brothers Antonio and Juan Miguel Carmona and their cousin, Juan Carmona, Ketama was one of the leading groups of the "new flamenco" movement. Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1985, the trio has directed the evolution of flamenco as a world-savvy music. In addition to their own albums, which fuse flamenco with salsa, Brazilian, reggae, pop, funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences, Ketama has collaborated on two albums -- Songhai and Songhai 2 -- with Malian multi-instrumentalist Toumani Diabate.

Mexico: Café Tacvba :: Como Te Extraño Mi Amor

Café Tacvba
Como Te Extraño Mi Amor

With rare objection, Café Tacuba is credited far and wide as the preeminent band to have arisen from the rock en español movement of the early '90s. The Mexican four-piece unfortunately isn't well characterized by the rock en español tag, for the "rock music sung in Spanish" descriptor does little justice to the stylistic diversity and creative strides showcased by Café Tacuba over the course of their career. The band employs a standard rock lineup of guitar/bass/drums with vocals, certainly, but the members also incorporate electronics as well as exotic instrumentation into their music, which encompasses styles as divergent as punk and ballads as well as regional Mexican and ambient electronica.
