Spain: Ketama :: Aquellas Pequeñas Cosas

Ketama & Joan Manuel Serrat
Aquellas pequeñas cosas

A trio, featuring brothers Antonio and Juan Miguel Carmona and their cousin, Juan Carmona, Ketama was one of the leading groups of the "new flamenco" movement. Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1985, the trio has directed the evolution of flamenco as a world-savvy music. In addition to their own albums, which fuse flamenco with salsa, Brazilian, reggae, pop, funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences, Ketama has collaborated on two albums -- Songhai and Songhai 2 -- with Malian multi-instrumentalist Toumani Diabate.

Mexico: Café Tacvba :: Como Te Extraño Mi Amor

Café Tacvba
Como Te Extraño Mi Amor

With rare objection, Café Tacuba is credited far and wide as the preeminent band to have arisen from the rock en español movement of the early '90s. The Mexican four-piece unfortunately isn't well characterized by the rock en español tag, for the "rock music sung in Spanish" descriptor does little justice to the stylistic diversity and creative strides showcased by Café Tacuba over the course of their career. The band employs a standard rock lineup of guitar/bass/drums with vocals, certainly, but the members also incorporate electronics as well as exotic instrumentation into their music, which encompasses styles as divergent as punk and ballads as well as regional Mexican and ambient electronica.

Cuba: Telmary Diaz • Pa Que Vuelva

Telmary Diaz
Pa Que Vuelva
(Recomendación de Dj Lobo)

Telmary Diaz — singer, street poet, rapper — is one of the leaders of the hip-hop revolution in Cuban popular music. Of course, the country's musical past is not forgotten. Diaz and her contemporaries take the rumba and the Son of Cuba, and add in the sensibility and style of hip-hop, funk and jazz.

USA: Pokey LaFarge • La La Blues

Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three
La La Blues

Pokey LaFarge writes and performs original and sometimes traditional music, steeped in American blues, country and Western swing from the days when 78s ruled the record player. LaFarge's music is honest and infused with respect for the era he loves — particularly the '20s and '30s. When you listen to this music as part of a diet of songs from the 21st century, it feels fresh, fun and altogether outstanding.

Chile: Jazzimodo • Santiago

JAZZIMODO
Santiago

(Live in Sala Master. September 12th 2008. Santiago-Chile)

Divididos
El Arriero

Rock band from Argentina Divididos was formed as a result of Sumo's breakup after its vocalist, Luca Prodan, passed away. The Latin rock act made its debut in 1989 with the release of 40 Dibujos Ahi En El Piso. At the beginning, even when the group had a new identity, Sumo wasn't forgotten. The band was always asked to play the old songs. In 1990, after Gustavo Collado left the band, drummer Federico Gil Solá took his place. A year later, Acariciandolo Aspero was released. After meeting producer Gustavo Santaolalla, Divididos moved to the U.S. to make their following album, called La Era De La Boludez. In 1995, Federico Gil Solá was replaced by Jorge Araujo, soon the group recorded a self-titled album, followed by 1998's Gol De Mujer and 1999's 10. That same year, the band celebrated its tenth anniversary, performing at Buenos Aires' Obras Sanitarias. Narigón Del Siglo and a double album called Viveza Criolla were released in the year 2000.
